01The pathway

Referral Without the Handover Gap

Most rehabilitation referrals involve a letter, a search for a provider and a wait, and the details of what the GP intended often don't survive the trip. At Nuevo Medical, rehabilitation referrals on the Gold Coast go to exercise physiology and physiotherapy practitioners working in the same building, from the same management plan. Our exercise and rehabilitation facility is Technogym-equipped and supervised, which means the prescribed work happens under clinical oversight rather than as a set of instructions to follow at a gym. Progress is reported back to your GP. Where care is better delivered elsewhere, our GPs refer externally. Call 1300 068 386 to book an appointment.

02What's covered

What a Rehabilitation Referral Covers

Referrals are made for a range of situations, and the practitioner involved depends on what's being addressed.

  • 01

    Post-surgical recovery

Graded reintroduction of movement and load following an operation. Timing and progression are set in line with the surgeon's instructions.

  • 02

    Injury rehabilitation

Assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal injury by a physiotherapist. This may run alongside exercise physiology for longer-term conditioning.

  • 03

    Deconditioning

Structured exercise for people whose activity has dropped after illness, hospitalisation or an extended inactive period. Programs start from current capacity rather than a standard baseline.

  • 04

    Chronic condition support

Supervised exercise as part of managing a long-term condition. The prescription is written against the GP's management plan rather than separately from it.

What Happens Between Referral and First Session

Once your GP makes the referral, an initial assessment appointment is arranged with the relevant practitioner. That assessment covers your medical history, the reason for referral, current physical capacity and any restrictions or precautions the GP or a treating surgeon has specified. The practitioner will test movement, strength and function relevant to what's being addressed. Bringing operation reports, imaging results or specialist letters means the practitioner can work from the actual clinical detail rather than a summary. From that assessment, the practitioner sets out a proposed structure, including session frequency and what each session will cover, and discusses it with you. Progress notes go back to your referring GP at agreed intervals, and the plan is reviewed rather than run to completion unchanged.

04Questions

FAQs

Physiotherapists typically assess and treat injury and movement problems using hands-on techniques alongside exercise, while exercise physiologists prescribe and supervise structured exercise for medical conditions and longer-term conditioning. Some situations involve both.

A referral isn't required to book privately, but one is needed to access Medicare or certain funding arrangements, and it gives the practitioner the clinical context. A GP referral also sets out any precautions that apply.

That depends on what's being addressed and the starting point, so it's determined at the initial assessment rather than in advance. Programs are generally reviewed at set intervals and adjusted from there.
