Clinical Psychologist on the Gold Coast

Online bookings are managed through Nookal.

Referrals

You can generally book allied health privately without a referral. If a GP referral or care plan is needed for Medicare or another funded pathway, Nuevo can arrange an onsite GP appointment so you can be assessed and, where clinically appropriate, the referral or care plan can be completed.

01The discipline

Psychological Care Inside the Same Centre

At Nuevo Medical, a clinical psychologist on the Gold Coast works within the same centre as General Practice, so care can be coordinated where appropriate. Sessions are shaped around the focus agreed with you, and frequency and duration depend on your needs, your clinician's judgement, the goals you set together and any referral or funding arrangements that apply. Private appointments can generally be booked without a referral. If a GP referral or care plan is required for Medicare or another funded pathway, Nuevo can arrange an onsite GP assessment through our mental health referral pathway. Call 1300 068 386 to book an appointment.

02The structure

How Psychological Work Is Structured

Psychological care follows a clear process, with the frequency and duration of sessions set with your clinician rather than fixed in advance.

  • 01

    Initial assessment

The first session establishes what's being addressed, relevant history and what the referral has identified. This shapes the approach rather than beginning treatment immediately.

  • 02

    Agreed focus

Sessions work towards a stated focus rather than covering everything at once. This is discussed and set with you rather than assigned.

  • 03

    Session planning

How often you attend, and over what period, is decided with your psychologist based on your needs and goals, together with any referral or funding arrangements that apply. Plans are reviewed rather than fixed at the outset.

  • 04

    Review

Progress is discussed with you and, where a GP is involved, with your GP at an agreed point. The plan is then continued, adjusted or concluded as clinically appropriate.

03First session

What the First Session Involves

The first appointment is an assessment session and works differently from those that follow. Your psychologist will ask what brought you in, how long it has been going on, what has and hasn't helped previously, and how it's affecting sleep, work, study and relationships. They'll ask about medical history, current medications and any previous psychological or psychiatric involvement, since these shape what approach is appropriate. It's worth knowing that you set the pace of what you discuss, and there's no requirement to cover everything in the first session. At the end of it, your psychologist explains the approach they propose, how they would expect the frequency and duration of sessions to be set with you, and what happens between appointments. If you're in crisis, call 000 or Lifeline on 13 11 14.

FAQs

A clinical psychologist holds postgraduate qualifications in clinical psychology and works with the assessment and treatment of psychological conditions. Psychologists practising in Australia hold current registration with AHPRA through the Psychology Board of Australia.

There is no set number. Frequency and duration depend on your individual needs, your psychologist's clinical judgement, the goals agreed with you and any referral or funding arrangements that apply. This is discussed at the initial assessment and reviewed as care continues.

A psychologist provides the referring GP with progress correspondence at agreed points, which is what allows the GP to review the plan. What is shared is discussed with you rather than assumed.
