01The approach

The General Practice Side of Pregnancy

Pregnancy involves several clinicians, and the GP role is often the one that runs across the whole of it. At Nuevo Medical, pregnancy care on the Gold Coast covers the general practice component: confirmation, early assessment, routine antenatal pathology and ultrasound, referral into obstetric or midwifery care, and postnatal review afterwards. We won't be providing obstetric delivery services at Bundall, so shared care and referral are how the pregnancy pathway works here. Pathology collection and ultrasound are available onsite, which reduces the appointment count considerably. Postnatal recovery can continue through our postnatal recovery program. 02What's covered

What GP Pregnancy Care Covers

Our GPs will cover the general practice component across pregnancy and the postnatal period.

  • 01

    Early pregnancy assessment

Confirmation, dating and initial history including medications and existing conditions. Referral pathways into obstetric or midwifery care are discussed at this point.

  • 02

    Routine antenatal pathology

The blood tests and screening arranged at defined stages of pregnancy. Onsite collection means these can be done at the time they're ordered.

  • 03

    Ultrasound coordination

Arranging the scans required at various points, with imaging available in the same building. Reports return to your GP and shared care team.

  • 04

    Postnatal review

Assessment of physical recovery, mood and infant feeding at the standard postnatal intervals. Referral to psychology or allied health is arranged where appropriate.

03Shared care

How Shared Care Works Between Your GP and Maternity Service

Shared care means your GP and your maternity service each handle part of the antenatal schedule, working from the same record. At the first appointment, your GP takes a full history covering existing conditions, medications, previous pregnancies and family history, and discusses which maternity services are available to you. Once you're booked with a hospital or midwifery service, your GP conducts a proportion of the routine antenatal visits and the maternity service handles the rest. Bringing your antenatal record to every GP appointment matters, since it's the document both sides work from. Results from pathology and ultrasound arranged at our centre go to your GP and to the maternity service. After birth, your GP handles postnatal review and continues as your usual doctor.

04Questions

FAQs

It's an arrangement where a GP conducts part of the routine antenatal schedule and a hospital or midwifery service conducts the rest, both working from a shared antenatal record. It's a common model in Australia for pregnancies without identified complications.

The first appointment generally happens in the early weeks, and it covers confirmation, dating, history and initial pathology. A GP will advise on timing based on individual circumstances.

A postnatal check reviews physical recovery, mood, feeding and contraception, and is typically arranged at defined intervals after birth. The specific timing is discussed before discharge or at the preceding appointment.
