Cardiac Stress Test on the Gold Coast

01The test

Observing the Heart Under Controlled Exertion

Some cardiac findings only appear when the heart is working harder, which is what a stress test is designed to capture. At Nuevo Medical, a cardiac stress test on the Gold Coast is carried out in our cardiology suite, where one of our two echocardiography rooms is equipped with a stress testing system. The test records heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure and symptoms while exertion is increased in stages under supervision. It's commonly arranged as part of chest pain assessment or where exercise tolerance has changed. Your cardiologist decides whether it's appropriate. Call 1300 068 386 to book an appointment.

02What it records

What the Test Records

Several measurements are taken simultaneously throughout the test.

  • 01

    Electrocardiogram

A continuous trace recorded before, during and after exertion. Changes appearing under load are a central part of the interpretation.

  • 02

    Blood pressure

Measured at each stage as workload increases. How blood pressure responds to exertion carries clinical meaning of its own.

  • 03

    Heart rate response

How quickly the rate rises with exertion and how it recovers afterwards. Recovery is recorded as well as the peak.

  • 04

    Symptoms

Anything you experience during the test is recorded against the stage at which it occurred. This is why you're asked to report symptoms as they happen rather than afterwards.

03Preparation

How to Prepare and What Happens on the Day

You'll usually be asked to wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes suitable for walking, since most testing is performed on a treadmill. Your cardiologist may ask you to withhold certain medications beforehand, and this instruction is given individually rather than as a general rule, so follow what you're told rather than assuming. Advice on eating before the test is provided with your appointment details. Electrodes are attached to the chest and a baseline recording is taken while you rest. The treadmill then begins at a gentle pace and the workload increases in stages, with staff monitoring throughout and asking how you're feeling. The test stops at a predetermined point or earlier if indicated. Recordings continue during recovery, and a cardiologist reports the findings afterwards.

04Questions

FAQs

It's used to observe how the heart behaves under controlled physical exertion, since some findings are not apparent at rest. A cardiologist determines whether it's an appropriate investigation for a given clinical question.

Comfortable clothing and closed, supportive shoes suitable for walking on a treadmill are generally recommended. The practice will confirm any specific requirements with the appointment details.

Some medications are withheld before testing and others are continued, and the instruction depends on the individual and the question being investigated. Follow the specific advice given by the referring cardiologist rather than a general rule.
