Chest Pain Assessment on the Gold Coast

01The approach

Investigating Chest Symptoms

Chest pain has a long list of possible causes, cardiac and otherwise, and the clinical work is largely about narrowing that list methodically. At Nuevo Medical, chest pain assessment on the Gold Coast is conducted by our cardiologists using history, examination and investigation, with echocardiography, stress testing and onsite imaging available in the same building. If your symptoms are current, severe or worsening, this is not the right pathway. Call 000 or attend an emergency department. Our service is for scheduled assessment of chest symptoms where an outpatient investigation has been recommended. Call 1300 068 386 to book an appointment.

02What's involved

What the Investigation May Involve

Which investigations apply depends entirely on what the history and examination suggest.

  • 01

    Electrocardiogram

A recording of the heart's electrical activity, usually the first test performed. It captures a moment, so a normal result doesn't exclude everything.

  • 02

    Pathology

Blood tests including lipids, glucose and, where relevant, cardiac markers. Collection is available onsite through our pathology partner.

  • 03

    Stress testing

Assessment of how the heart responds to controlled exertion, available in our cardiology suite. Your cardiologist decides whether this is appropriate.

  • 04

    Imaging

Echocardiography, and CT where indicated, both available within the centre. The choice depends on the specific clinical question being asked.

What Your Cardiologist Asks and Examines

The history carries more diagnostic weight than any single test, so the consultation spends time on it. Your cardiologist will ask what the pain feels like, where it sits, what brings it on, what settles it, how long episodes last and whether anything has changed over time. They'll ask about breathlessness, palpitations, past cardiac events, medications and family history. Examination covers blood pressure, heart sounds, lungs and pulses. Bringing any previous ECGs, stress test reports, imaging or discharge summaries is genuinely useful, since comparison against an earlier trace often answers a question a new one can't. After investigation, a follow-up consultation reviews the findings, and your cardiologist will explain what they indicate and what the next step is.

04Questions

FAQs

Sudden, severe or worsening chest pain requires emergency assessment, not a scheduled appointment. In Australia, call 000.

No. Chest symptoms can arise from the musculoskeletal system, the digestive system, the lungs and other sources, which is why assessment works through the possibilities systematically rather than assuming a cardiac cause.

An ECG records the heart's electrical activity as a trace, while an echocardiogram is an ultrasound image showing the heart's structure and how it's moving. They answer different clinical questions and are often used together.
