01The approach
Checking Things That Develop Quietly
A number of the conditions general practice manages develop over years without producing symptoms, which is the entire reason routine checks exist. At Nuevo Medical, health checks on the Gold Coast are structured around age, family history and individual risk factors rather than run as an identical panel for everyone. Our GPs will discuss which screening is appropriate for you and why, including national screening programs you may be eligible for. Onsite pathology collection and imaging mean the tests ordered during the consultation can usually be arranged in the same building. Results that identify ongoing risk often lead into cardiometabolic risk management. Call 1300 068 386 to book an appointment.
02What's included
What a Health Check Typically Includes
The content of a check varies by age, sex and history, but several elements are common.
- 01
History and risk factors
Family history, smoking, alcohol, activity and occupational exposures. This is what determines which of the remaining checks are relevant.
- 02
Physical measurements
Blood pressure, weight, waist circumference and heart rate. These are recorded so they can be compared at future visits rather than viewed once.
- 03
Pathology
Bloods that may include lipids, glucose, kidney and liver function depending on your circumstances. Your GP will explain which tests are being ordered and what each one looks at.
- 04
Screening eligibility
A review of national screening programs relevant to your age group. Your GP will explain what each involves and whether it applies.

How Your GP Decides Which Checks Apply
There isn't a single health check that suits everyone, and the first part of the consultation is working out what applies to you. Your GP will take a detailed history covering family conditions, previous investigations, current medications, occupation and lifestyle factors. They'll then explain which checks are relevant on that basis and which aren't, along with the reasoning. Bringing previous results, particularly older blood tests, means your GP can look at change over time rather than a single reading. Where a test is ordered, they'll explain what it examines and when results will be discussed. Follow-up is arranged at the time of the consultation, and any result requiring further investigation is discussed with you directly rather than communicated by message alone.

FAQs
Frequency depends on age, family history and existing risk factors, so a GP sets the interval individually. There is no single schedule that applies to every adult.
A health check is a broad review of history, measurements and risk factors, while a screening test looks for a specific condition in people without symptoms. National screening programs in Australia target defined age groups for particular conditions.
It depends which blood tests are being ordered, as some require fasting and others don't. The practice will confirm what's needed when the pathology request is issued.
