01About
For more than 25 years, Dr Shailesh Khatri has been part of the Gold Coast’s cardiac community, caring for patients across routine and preventative cardiology, complex coronary intervention and emergency cardiac care.
Over that time, Dr Khatri has performed more than 15,000 cardiac procedures, including more than 1,500 emergency Primary PCI procedures for acute heart attacks and 400 TAVI procedures.
Those numbers reflect a career spent at the forefront of interventional cardiology, but also something equally important: decades of experience caring for people at some of the most critical moments of their lives.
Experience built over decades
Dr Khatri graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland before completing cardiology training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital and John Hunter Hospital.
In 2001, he travelled to Vancouver to undertake an Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at St Paul’s Hospital under Professor John Webb, an internationally recognised leader in interventional and structural cardiology. During his fellowship, Dr Khatri completed more than 1,200 procedures before returning to Australia and establishing his practice on the Gold Coast.
His contribution to cardiac care has extended beyond private practice. More than two decades ago, Dr Khatri established the Primary PCI service at Tweed Hospital, expanding access to emergency angioplasty for patients across the Northern Rivers. That service continues today.
Dr Khatri is also an ACOR-accredited TAVI operator and Adjunct Professor at Bond University, where he contributes to postgraduate medical education.
His areas of expertise
Dr Khatri cares for patients across a broad range of cardiovascular conditions, with particular expertise in interventional cardiology, coronary artery disease and structural heart disease.
His procedural expertise includes coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, emergency Primary PCI for acute heart attack, and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Experience when it matters. Care for everything around it.
For all the complexity of modern cardiology, Dr Khatri’s approach to his patients is deliberately straightforward: understand the person, investigate appropriately, explain the options clearly and recommend the right course of care.
That may mean ongoing medical management. It may mean an intervention. And increasingly, it means thinking beyond the immediate cardiac problem to recovery, rehabilitation, prevention and the lifestyle factors that influence long-term cardiovascular health.
At Nuevo Medical, this philosophy is supported by an integrated model of cardiac care. Specialist consultation, cardiac investigations, pathology and cardiac rehabilitation can be brought together within the one centre, making it easier for patients to move through different stages of their care with greater continuity.
Dr Khatri places particular importance on involving patients in decisions about their treatment and ensuring they understand not just what is being recommended, but why.
